11.5 Detailed Analysis of a Defect – Clicking on FULL PATH

latest update: 2021-06-15

A drill down from FULL PATH opens a window to display the execution path and source code of the defect. The number of paths is highlighted with a metric along with depth, which is the number of steps the defect takes through the code, and the complexity of the defect.

The execution trace path is shown in the left hand pane, highlighting the step number, file name and line number for each step of the defect through the source code.  Xcalscan initially shows the source and sink locations in the right hand pane. You can then click on a step in the left pane and Xcalscan will display the code in the right pane at the respective location of the defect. You can then scroll through the source code to view the source code around the location of the defect.

Arrows show how the defect moves through the source code with the colour of the arrow referring to the comment next to the source code. Comments are indicated by > or in the event there are multiple comments referring to the same line then they will be indexed by >>. The number in the comment refers to the step number in the left hand pane.

In the top right corner, you can see the detailed explanation of this specific defect providing you with a better understanding of its cause and the implications.
